The Hot Dog Eating Competition was previously a unisex event with men and women competing in the same category. It was in 2011, that the event was divided into two categories. Although, 1975 was an exception.
Joey Chestnut and Takeru Kobayashi have won the competition multiple times. Chestnut stands out as he has won the competition 15 times. Meanwhile, Kobayashi has 6 titles to his name.
The rules and methods of the contest are very simple. The participants will have 10 minutes to devour as many Nathan's Famous hot dogs as they can.
To help the participants swallow and regulate the quick flow of the contest, they are allowed to have water and other beverages during the competition.
Each contestant can have his/her own scorekeeper and partially eaten hot dogs are also counted. At the end of the regulation, if they are still chewing, they can qualify only if they successfully swallow it.
In case of a tie, participants will face off in a Sudden death eat-offs. The Fourth of July celebrations just got merrier.
