Every NBA team has its own identity which includes a name, logo, colors, and icon. A mascot can be a person, animal, or object that a group or organization chooses as a representation of its identity. 

Animals and birds are often used as a mascot in sports to symbolize the team and engage the audience's attention. Apart from providing extra enjoyment to the game, they also feature in the advertising campaign helping on raising brand recognition.

"Harry the Hawk," a red-tailed hawk has served as the Atlanta Hawks mascot since 1986. Harry is eminent among the fans for high-flying tricks and antics on the court. He often takes part in basketball dunks, backflips, and crowd participation shouts.

Since 1963, the Boston Celtics have been represented by the cartoon character Lucky the Leprechaun. He is a small, green-clad leprechaun with a big hat and a bushy beard. Lucky is well known for his energetic and joyful attitude as he frequently leads chants at Celtics games.

One of the first emblems in NBA history, Chicago Bull's mascot Benny the Bull made his debut back in 1969. Forbes named him the most well-known sports figurehead in 2013, and the NBA mascot of the year in 2015.

The Charlotte Hornets NBA team's official representative is named Hugo the Hornet. For the Charlotte Hornets, Hugo made his official debut in 1988. He was chosen from a list of more than 6,000 fan suggestions.

The Cleveland Cavaliers' mascot is called Moondog and it has served the team since 2003. Similarly, Champ is the symbol of the Mavericks.

Champ is a blue horse with a white mane and tail and wears the number 00 on the Mavericks shirt. It has served as the team's avatar since 2003 and plays an important role in both the Mavericks' game experience and brand identification.

Rocky the Mountain Lion, a character for the Denver Nuggets made its debut on 15 December 1990 and has continued to entertain ever since.

Houston Rockets mascot Clutch the Bear made his debut in 1995 and has become a fan favorite. Named as a Mascot of the Year twice he was also inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2006. 

The official representative of Utah Jazz is Jazz Bear who made his debut during the 1990-91 season and has been an iconic figure since then. 

NBA Teams Without Mascots

There are four NBA teams that do not have a mascot and they are listed as follows;

On November 3, 2012, the Brooklyn Nets introduced a brand-new superhero mascot called BrooklyKnight. The BrooklyKnight character retired after the Nets' second season in Brooklyn, leaving the team without an emblem.

Brooklyn has established their brand identity around an organized, modern look with a black-and-white color palette instead of a character.

The brand identity of the team is based on the concept of 'Strength in Numbers' which shows the team's dedication to cooperation and unity, both on and off the court. 

Instead of the mascot, the team has the best NBA players in history like Wilt Chamberlain, Rick Barry, and Stephen Curry. There have been three MVP awards given out while Warriors players Wilt Chamberlain and Stephen Curry were on the court.

The pay for mascots varies as it does for NBA players. Some teams have specific terms for their icons because of the special and demanding nature of their roles. The typical NBA mascot wage is about $60,000 per year. 

Rocky the Mountain Lion, a representative for the Denver Nuggets, has the highest salary, earning $625,000 annually. Over the course of more than 25 years, Rocky has amused Nuggets supporters and received many honors including the NBA 2012 Mascot of the Year award.

Next on the list is Atlanta Hawks mascot Harry the Hawk who earns $600,000 annually. For the public appearance, Harry earns $250 per 30 minutes. While not in the team's game The Hawk participates in the fundraising program and other community programs.

Benny the Bull earns $400,000 annually and his trademark is the popcorn spills from giant popcorn bags. Well-known for his eyepopping flips, tricky jumps, stunts, and thunderous dunks, Benny was voted for 2016 Mascot of the Year.

Making a debut in 2003 Cleveland Cavaliers' mascot Moondog earns $400,000 annually and has also been selected to multiple All-Star weekend appearances. Moondog is usually seen at the home games taking behind-the-back shots from halfcourt. 

Rumble the Bison Oklahoma City Thunder's mascot earns an annual salary of $300,000. Bison made his debut in 2009 and has been a great ambassador for the team.
