Pickleball is a racket or paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, ping pong, and badminton into one family-friendly game.
It is played both indoors and outdoors. Not only that but Pickleball was named the official state sport of Washington DC in 2022. According to SFIA, the game has now 4.8 million participants nationwide and an approximately 39.3% growth rate over the last two years.
It can be played singles or doubles on a game court that looks similar to a tennis court but is very much smaller. You use paddles and a plastic ball instead of rackets.
There are two theories behind the name 'pickleball' all around. First, the wife of one of the founders of the game started calling the game pickleball because it reminded her of the motley crew of rowers that would compete in pickleboat races.
Secondly, it claims that the family dog whose name was Pickles, from there inspired by the name of the game 'Pickleball'.
There are some basic equipment to get started which are minimal. Pickleball is played with a flat paddle as opposed to a stringed racket as seen in tennis and badminton.
The original paddles were cut out of pure wood by McCallum himself but the modern versions come in various sizes and thickness levels to accommodate players style of play.
That rising attention has been great for the professional game as well. Best players like Ben Johns and Anna Leigh Waters are quickly becoming household names and taking the popularity of the game to the next level.
