10 Worst Season After Winning Super Bowl

LA Rams beat the Cincinnati Bengals by 23-20 at SoFi Stadium to become the Super Bowl LVI champion on February 13, 2022. It was their first Super Bowl win after changing its name from St. Louis Rams to Los Angeles Rams. 

However, things quickly went downhill for the 1945 NFL Champions in the 2022 season. Head coach Sean McVay cited the team suffering from an abundance of injuries in response to the results.

LA recorded five wins and 12 losses in the regular season, creating history for most losses by a defending Super Bowl champion in history.

New York Giants has bagged Super Bowl Championship four times in the XXI (1986), XXV (1990), XLII (2007), and XLVI (2011) seasons. 

NY Giants coached by Richard Coughlin made history for the worst regular season record to win Super Bowl in 2011 with an average 9-7 record.

As the longest-established team in the league, the Giants have also won eight NFL Championships. However, they have also recorded one of the worst Super Bowl hangovers years after their win at Super Bowl 2011.

They failed to make it to the playoffs in 2012 and finished the regular season with 7-9. This was their first losing season since 2004.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers won the Super Bowl XXXVII title in 2002, beating Oakland Raiders by 48-21. The 2002 Bucs defense team is ranked as one of the best defenses in NFL history.

Buccaneers resumed the winning streak as they started the following season with a sensational win over the long-time rival Philadelphia Eagle.

However, things did not seem to go on their way, and the Buccaneers did not qualify for the Super Bowl playoff. They finished the regular season with a meager record of 7-9.

While the 2003 season proved to be one of the worst NFL records after winning the Super Bowl, the Buccaneers won the Super Bowl LV in 2021 with star players Tom Brady, Leonard Fournette, Mike Evans, Rob Gronkowski and Alex Cappa in their ranks.

Denver Broncos knabbed the Super Bowl XXXIII with a score of 34-19 from the Atlanta Falcons on January 31, 1999.

That year's MVP quarterback John Elway retired during the off-season as one of the richest NFL players though it was a loss to the team. As expected, the 1999 season is still considered the worst-ever season for a team defending their Super Bowl title in a non-strike season.

The Broncos lost their first four regular season games and recorded their season end at 6–10. 1999 was their first losing season since 1994 and the worst since 1990.

Meanwhile, they again won Super Bowl 50 in 2015. Likewise, the 1998 Broncos have been ranked as the 12th greatest Super Bowl champions on the NFL Network's documentary series "America's Game: The Super Bowl Champions."

The same team took the No.14 position on the 100 greatest teams of all time on the occasion of the NFL's 100th anniversary.

The richest NFL team Dallas Cowboys valued at $8 billion, recorded one of the worst records after winning Super Bowl in 1996. 

They won Super Bowl XXX (1995), winning 27-17 points against the Pittsburgh Steelers. While they were first in the NFC East Division and reached the playoffs, their 10-6 record did not impress the fans.

The year was marked by teammates and crew members either leaving or being suspended for ethical reasons. Dallas did not win any playoff games until 2009 and did not make it past the divisional round till 2022. 

However, they still boast the second most Super Bowl wins at five times, tied with the 49ers after the Steelers and Patriots' wins at 6. Cowboys are the winner of the Super Bowl 1971 (VI), 1977 (XII), 1992 (XXVII), 1993 (XXVIII), and 1995 (XXX).

Washington Redskins won Super Bowl XXII (1987) on January 31, 1988. They had beaten Denver Broncos at 42-10, only to record one of the worst NFL records later on as a Super Bowl champion.

They failed to hold out to their previous year's record of 11-4 as they finished the 1988 season at 7-9. The Redskins also failed to qualify for the playoffs for the first time since 1985.

With the record, Washington became the seventh team in NFL to miss the playoffs as the defending Super Bowl champion. The Redskins are the winner of Super Bowl XVII (1982) and XXVI (1991).

Moreover, the team made history by letting Doug Williams play in the Super Bowl as the first African American quarterback to start and win the trophy.

Before their 2012 record for the worst season as a Super Bowl champion, the New York Giants led the 1987 season as the same. They became the Super Bowl XXI Champion on January 25, 1987, beating the Broncos 39-20.

While the Redskins were the next champion, the Giants failed to qualify for the playoffs as they lost the first five matches. They also placed last in their division for the first time that season.

The Giants ultimately finished their regular season at 6-9, drastically away from their previous year's record of 14–2. Meanwhile, they finished in the fifth position in their division league of NFC East. 

However, it is worth noting that the New York Giants are the only NFL team to win a Super Bowl in each of the past four decades.

San Francisco 49ers became the Super Bowl XVI Champion triumphing over the Cincinnati Bengals on January 24, 1982.

As the following season was strike-shortened, the team only managed to get three wins while their losses were at six. The 1982 season was considered the worst record in NFL history until the 2022 Super Bowl Champion, Los Angeles Rams. 

On the other hand, the former 49ers' kicker, Mike Cofer is eminent for the worst kick In NFL history during Super Bowl XXIII in 1989.

The 49ers lead championship counts with 21 division championships, seven conference championships, and five Super Bowl championships. 

Before being known as Los Vegas Raiders, the team was known as Los Angeles Raiders and Oakland Raiders.

Oakland Raiders operated in NFL from 1960 to 1985 and again from 1995 to 2019. Meanwhile, Los Angeles Raiders were present in the league from 1982 to 1994 and were the Super Bowl XVIII champions in 1983.

During the tea's tenure as Oakland Raiders, they became the Super Champions XI in 1976 and XV in 1980. 

After their win on January 25, 1981, at Super Bowl XV, the Raiders became the fourth team in NFL history to enter a season-and-miss playoff despite being the defending Super Bowl champions. 

They recorded their regular season end at 7–9, far from their previous record of 11-5. They also finished fourth in their division league of AFC West that year. The Raiders were renamed as Los Vegas Raiders in the starting of the 2020 NFL season.

Kansas City Chiefs holds a record for one of the worst super bowl hangovers years in the 1970 season. They were the winner of the Super Bowl IV held on January 11, 1970, to determine the winner of the 1969 champion that year.

They won against the Minnesota Vikings with a huge margin point at 23-7 at the Tulane Stadium in New Orleans. More than 80, 562 spectators watched the big game night, only to witness the Chiefs' sloping performance the next season.

The team officially debuted in NFL in 1970, as it previously played in AFL. However, they ended the regular season with a 7–5–2 record while missing the playoffs for the first time since 1967.

Meanwhile, they finished in second place in their division league of the AFC West.
