Moreover, Bill spoke to KU Sports about his wife Cindy, describing her as an ideal coach's wife. She always supports him and the team and is excellent at helping him identify any issues with the players.
Cindy had brought many valuable contributions to the team, including her passion for the sport as a fan, her ability to provide constructive feedback to Bill as a sounding board, and her skill in reading body language to help identify any issues with the players.
Outside of her involvement with the team, Cindy has a deep passion for helping children. She pursued a Master's in elementary education after graduating from OKS and, in 2006, founded the Assists Foundation with Bill to assist youth in their community.
Bill Self Children
Bill has two children named Tyler Self and Lauren Self. Their kids have been fond of sports, following early basketball exposure since childhood.
Their son, Tyler, played in 46 games and six NCAA Tournament games during his career with Kansas.
On the other hand, his daughter has been pleased with his accomplishments and has been there every step of the way, frequently sitting right next to her mother, Cindy, during games, living and dying with everything the Jayhawks do on the field.
Aside from sports, she has chosen to be a faith-based mentor and guide for young people.
Lauren Self
Bill's daughter Lauren graduated from the University of Kansas with a major in Elementary Education. She works for the Christian ministry Young Life in Richardson, Texas.
Her husband, Hayden graduated from Cedarville University in Cedarville, Ohio, with a major in Christian Education. He works as a music pastor at Canyon Creek Baptist Church in Richardson, Texas.
Besides, the couple exchanged vows on August 16, 2014, in Arvest Bank Theatre at the Midland.
The Bride and Groom planned their wedding by focusing on what was important to them, including meaningful moments and relationships with family and friends.
During the ceremony, they had talented friends singing, and the groom, a worship leader, sang a special song to his bride. The bride, Lauren, wanted to honor the tradition of her father's basketball team by tossing confetti newspaper in the air as they exited the church.
At the reception, many food stations allowed guests to mingle throughout the evening. The band, Musivo Live, kept the dance floor packed all night, and the guests enjoyed a gourmet popcorn bar.
Tyler Self
Bill's son Tyler Self has been a co-founder and managing partner of FERN Financial Group since September 2022.
Before acquiring that role, he was appointed Austin Spurs general manager at Spurs Sports and Entertainment in August 2017. It's the role he has served for almost five years.
Self worked as the assistant general manager for Austin; before that, he spent two years as an assistant in the basketball operations department for San Antonio.
He made a name for himself during his college career at Lawrence, where he played for Kansas for five seasons, from 2012-13 to 2016-17. One of those seasons was a redshirt year.
Although Self wasn't a star player with KU, he was a fan favorite. Throughout his career, he played in 46 games and scored 19 points with 12 assists, eight rebounds, and one steal.
He played 95 minutes at KU before transitioning to the San Antonio Spurs as a basketball operations assistant after his playing career ended.
Bill Self Family Life
Bill family includes his parents Margaret Self and Bill Self Sr. He grew up alongside his sister name, Shelly Self Anderson.
His dad, Self Sr., played basketball during his collegiate days and later coached basketball as the head coach for high school girls.
He passed down his knowledge of basketball fundamentals to his son, Bill, including shooting with the correct foot and using his left hand.
Bill and his sister Shelly Anderson practiced these skills in the driveway of their family home in Oklahoma, with Shelly even helping Bill learn to get open off screens.
Bill became a starter at Edmond Memorial High and later at Oklahoma State University, partly thanks to the skills he learned from his father.
Father Bill Self Sr
Bill Self Sr. was raised in Hitchita, a small town in eastern Oklahoma, and worked on the family farm picking cotton in the fields.
Self Sr. passed away at the age of 82. He had been battling rheumatoid lung disease and contracted pneumonia and COVID-19 while in the hospital.
Self Sr worked in education and athletics as a coach and teacher. He coached the Morris High girl's basketball team to a state title in 1966 while working as the school superintendent.
He later opened a school supply business and worked for the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association (OSSAA) until 1999, where he served as the executive director from 1991 to 1996.
Self Sr. achieved many great things in his career, including becoming a school superintendent at a young age and coaching a small school's basketball team.
Mother Margaret Self
Margaret and Bill Self Sr., who celebrated their 60th anniversary in July 2022, have a solid connection to basketball.
They watched their children play and followed their son's coaching career.
Margaret played basketball and even holds the family record for the most points scored in a single game, beating her son's career-high by one point.
In the past, girls' basketball games were played differently than today. In some states, only three players from each team were allowed to cross half-court, and coaches could select any of the six players on the floor to shoot free throws when a player was fouled.
Margaret, who is 80, only recently shared with her son about her career night playing for the Boynton High Cardinals in Muskogee County, Oklahoma.
Her father, A.B. Crocker, was the coach and personally chose her to shoot many free throws, which is a testament to her skill and talent on the court.
