Lakers Draft Picks Next 5 Years include 1st round pick owed to Pelicans in the 2024 or 2025 draft. The Lakers retain their 1st round pick in 2026.
The National Basketball Association (NBA) organizes a draft in June, during which teams select players who have never competed in the NBA.
The Lakers selected Elgin Baylor with their first overall pick in the 1958 NBA Draft. They also selected Magic Johnson with their 2nd first-round pick in the 1979 Draft, who was rated by ESPN as the greatest NBA point guard of all time in 2007.
LA originally had the eighth overall pick, but they transferred it to the New Orleans Pelicans as part of the Anthony Davis trade. In 2019, Moritz Wagner and the Lakers' first second-round pick were traded to the Washington Wizards.
In the 2023 NBA draft Lakers selected Indiana freshman guard Jalen Hood-Schifino who became the first Hoosier selected in the NBA since 2019.
LA Lakers Future Draft Picks
The LA Lakers draft pick for the next five years are:
- 2024 NBA Draft: 1st round pick owed to Pelicans, 2nd round pick owed to Memphis
- 2025 NBA Draft: 1st round pick owed to Pelicans, 2nd round pick owned
- 2026 NBA Draft: 1st round pick owned, 2nd round pick owed to Cleveland
- 2027 NBA Draft: 1st round pick owed to Utah, 2nd round pick owned
- 2028 NBA Draft: 1st round pick owned, 2nd round pick owed to Washington or Orlando
2024 NBA Draft
The 2024 pick of the Los Angeles Lakers may be selected by the New Orleans Pelicans.
The Lakers were expected to get the second-round pick from Washington or Memphis in exchange for their 2024 second-round pick from the Grizzlies, but that pick was moved to Minnesota as part of the D'Angelo Russell trade.
The Lakers will ultimately be left without a second-round pick as well.
2025 NBA Draft
One of the Lakers' 2024 or 2025 first-round picks will be owned by the Pelicans, but only one. However, due to the structure of the trade, neither pick is now tradeable because the Lakers won't know which one they hold until 2024.
The team hasn't exchanged their second-round draft choice. In the Beverley-Bryant-Bamba transaction, they got a second-round selection of the Clippers.
2026 NBA Draft
The Lakers formally hold their 2026 pick, but they are unable to trade it because they won't know whether they control their 2025 pick until the Pelicans decide in 2024.
In November 2020, the team transferred JaVale McGee, a second-round pick, and Alfonzo McKinnie and Jordan Bell to Cleveland in exchange for those players.
As part of the Bryant trade, they received a second-round draft choice from the Denver Nuggets, the 2023 NBA Champions.
2027 NBA Draft
As part of the swap that sent out Westbrook and brought in Russell, Jarred Vanderbilt, and Malik Beasley, the Lakers traded their first-round pick from the 2027 draft to the Jazz.
The pick is top-4 protected and becomes a second-round pick in 2027 prohibiting the Lakers from trading either of their second-round picks.
2028 NBA Draft
The Lakers will owe Orlando the more favorable of their own or Washington's second-round pick as part of the trade with Orlando Magic that achieved them the No. 35 pick and eventually Max Christie in the 2022 NBA Draft.
The less desirable of those picks is transferred to Washington Wizards as part of the Rui Hachimura trade.
Lakers 2023 First Round Pick
- Round 1: No 17, Jalen Hood- Schifino
Jalen Hood-Schifino is the fourth Hoosiers player to be selected for the 2023 draft. He is the 27th first-round NBA draft selection from Indiana.
Schifino will join developmental infrastructure in Los Angeles and is the highest-drafted Lakers since Lonzo Ball in 2017. Due to his effort on defense, he was one of the top two-way prospects in the 2023 draft.
He will be able to play right away in his first professional season. Jalen represented the Hoosiers in college basketball and was one of the top players in the 2022 class.
Hood-Schifino was selected as an all-star and given a chance to participate in the Jordan Brand Classic, where he finished with 14 points and three made three-pointers.
Jalen was a fan of late Kobe Bryant so his favorite team was the Lakers. He participated in sports at Combine Academy in Lincolnton, North Carolina, as a sophomore.
Hood-Schifino transferred to Kevin Boyle's Montverde Academy in Florida at the start of his junior season. He won the GEICO High School Basketball National Championships in back-to-back years at Montverde in 2021 and 2022.
During his college career, Jalen played in 32 games and recorded an average of 13.5 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 3.7 assists while playing 33.1 minutes each game.
The most points scored by an Indiana freshman since Eric Gordon against Chattanooga in 2007 was recorded by Hood-Schifino, who scored 33 points on January 8, 2023, in an 84-83 loss to Northwestern at Assembly Hall.
In a 79-71 victory over Purdue on February 25, 2023, at Mackey Arena, Hood-Schifino set a freshman-era record for Indiana with 35 points.
How Many Draft Picks Do The Lakers Have?
LA Lakers had two picks in the 2023 NBA draft.
- Round 1: No. 17, Jalen Hood- Schifino
- Round 2: No. 40, Maxwell Lewis
Prior to the NBA Draft in 2023, the LA Lakers held the Nos. 17 and 47 picks. However, they made a move by trading the No. 47 pick and money to the Indiana Pacers for the pick No. 40.
Jalen Hood-Schifino, a guard out of Indiana University, was selected as the No. 17 overall choice. Jalen boasts exceptional length, defensive versatility, and the ability to be a creator and secondary scoring option.
With second-round draft picks, the Lakers have a history of scoring big, and they picked Maxwell Lewis, a wing from Pepperdine University in Malibu, California, at No. 40.
Lewis was a mid-major star who averaged 17.1 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game in his last college season.
There is a growing possibility that the Lakers will trade their first-round pick after considering the option. There are several clubs that might be interested in exchanging for the Lakers' choice, including the Brooklyn Nets, Charlotte Hornets, Indiana Pacers, and Sacramento Kings.
