Oregon State Head Coach Salary And Coaching Staff

Oregon State football Head Coach Jonathan Smith used to play as a quarterback in his playing days. He played for Oregon State Beavers Football from 1998 to 2001.

Smith was brought in as a replacement for Gary Andersen who had a really bad period with the team. But Smith's arrival slowly turned things around for the Beavers as they started taking momentum.

He guided the Beavers to a 2-10 record in his debut season. As his team scored 30 points on average in each game, which was the most for the team since 2012.

The Beavers had a 5-7 record in his second year, and they registered their first Pac-12 away game since 2014 that year.

The COVID pandemic restricted Oregon football to just 7 matches in 2020. But fortunately made a positive mark as for the first time since 2013, they concluded the season with a winning record.

Smith guided the Beavers to their initial bowl game since 2013 in 2021. In the LA Bowl, they proved to be a stronger side over Colorado State after they knocked them by a 38–28 score.

Last year, he guided the Beavers to their best record in 10 years with a 9-3 record. His efforts earned him the title of Pac-12 Co-Coach of the Year as well.

However, he started his coaching career as a graduate assistant for Oregon State. He joined Idaho as a quarterback coach in 2004 and worked there for over 5 years. In 2010, he was appointed as Montona's offensive coordinator as well as QB coach but he only lasted a year there.

He then joined Boise State as a QB coach in 2012 and left in 2013. In 2014, he was hired as Washington Huskies Football offensive coordinator as well as QB.

After Oregon State, the team where he started his playing as well as his coaching career came calling, that too as a head coach, he just couldn't refuse and signed the contract with the Beavers in 2018.

Oregon State's defensive coordinator is Trent Bray. He was appointed to the Beavers coaching staff by the then-new head coach Smith. 

Initially, he was the team's linebackers coach until 2021 but was promoted to defensive coordinator and linebacker coach in 2022 after his impressive work.

Bray has managed to make a successful and positive impact on the team as Oregon's defense made a huge improvement last year. The team concluded the season at number 28 in scoring defense and number 35 overall in the country.

He is mostly known for his magnificent defensive strategy. He is renowned for his capability to improve and help players grow. Omar Speights, a linebacker for Oregon State, won the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year award in 2022 under Bray's guidelines.

Bray is considered a rising star in the coaching world and will likely soon rank among the best defensive coordinators in the nation and hopefully a head coach in the near future.

Having played as a linebacker for Oregon State from 2002 to 2005, he played for the Hamburg Sea Devils in 2007, it is one of the NFL Europe teams that got closed in late 2007.

In 2008 he started his coaching career as a a graduate assistant for Arizona State. He joined California Redwoods as a linebacker coach in 2009. He was appointed as Arizona State linebacker coach in 2010 and he lasted there for a year.

In 2012, he again joined Oregon State as a graduate assistant and a linebacker coach, and he took that role until 2014. He then joined Nebraska the following year as a linebacker coach but in 2017 he was appointed as the interim head coach of the Nebraska after the sacking of head coach Mike Riley.

He was soon released by Nebraska after they appointed Scott Frost on December 2nd, 2017. However, he was again given the opportunity to come back to Oregon State football as a linebacker coach in 2018 and is thriving as a backroom staff of Smith.

Brian Lindgren is the offensive coordinator for Oregon State's football team. He joined Oregon State Beavers in 2018 as a backroom staff after Jonathan Smith was appointed head coach of Oregon State. The Beavers' offense has significantly improved under Lindgren's guidance.

With 447.1 yards per game of overall offense, number 27 in scoring offense with 33.6 points per game, and No. 32 in passing offense with 267.1 yards per game, the Beavers were at number 31 nationally in 2022.

He is tasked with guiding an offense that includes Nolan, RB Deshaun Fenwick, and WR Anthony Gould, among other exciting young players.

Moreover, he started his playing career as a quarterback and played for Idaho from 2001 to 2003. His coaching started as a QB coach for the Redlands in 2005.

From 2006 to 2011, he joined Northern Arizona and worked in different coaching roles. He was the wide receiver coach in his first year then in 2007 he worked as a running back coach, from 2008 to 2011 he worked as a passing game coordinator, QB coach, and offensive coordinator.

In 2012, he joined San Jose State as offensive coordinator and QB coach. He worked as offensive coordinator and QB coach for Colorado from 2013 to 2017.

Currently, he is working as an offensive coordinator as well as QB coach for the Beavers.

After joining Oregon and having made a significant impact on the team, he was approached by Arizona State for the offensive coordinator role but he stayed loyal and refused the offer made by them.

Oregon State football assistant coach Keith Bhonapha also serves as the team's running backs coach. The 43-year-old played as a defensive back for Hawaii back in 1999 to 2002.

He started his coaching journey as a graduate assistant for the team he played, Hawaii in 2003. He joined Boise State in 2009 as a running back coach, where he worked until 2013.

In 2014, he joined Washington and worked there in multiple roles such as running back, recruiting coordinator, and special team coordinator up until 2021.

In 2022 he joined Boise State as assistant head coach but the next year he was added to Oregon State head coach Smith's backroom staff as an assistant head coach and running back coach.

Oregon State football coaches have undoubtedly played a crucial role in the success of the team. The backroom staff is in charge of several different duties, such as coaching, scouting, providing for the needs of the player's health, and many more.

Individual player skill development falls within the expertise of coaches. They work to improve their skills, their physical fitness, and their mental strength.

As an example, some coaches are experts in coaching quarterbacks, offensive lines, or any other positions, players can increase their skills in particular areas by receiving specialized training thanks to this specialization.
