Boston Celtics 2023 coaching staff includes Joe Mazzulla, Ben Sullivan, Damon Stoudamire, Aaron Miles, Tony Dobbins and DJ MacLeay.
Their joint effort guided the Celtics to the 2023 Eastern Conference Finals, but they lost to the Miami Heat despite a dramatic comeback from a 3-0 series deficit to tie 3-3.
However, Boston's dreams were shattered in the last game as they experienced a devastating loss and missed out on the championship game.
In accordance with NBC Sports, a comprehensive restructuring is slated to occur within the Celtics coaching ensemble following the gut-wrenching defeat to Miami.
The Celtics are likely to retain Joe Mazzulla as their head coach. However, there could be significant changes in Mazzulla's group of assistant coaches for the 2023-24 season.
Three assistant coaches, Ben Sullivan, Mike Moser, and Aaron Miles will possibly depart from Boston this offseason.
Joe Mazzulla - Head Coach
Joe Mazzulla is the head of the Boston Celtics coaching staff 2023 season. Mazzulla took the mantle of managing Boston on February 16, 2023.
He joined the crew as an assistant to Brad Stevens in June 2019. In the past few years, the Celtics have seen a lot of turnovers in their crew. Brad Stevens, who had been the head coach for eight seasons, left the team in 2021 to pave the way for Ime Udoka.
However, in September 2022, Udoka faced a one-year suspension, leaving Boston with no alternative but to appoint Joe as an interim coach.
Mazzulla did a collectively good job maintaining a win ratio of 57-25 and achieving two Coach of the Month awards.
He also served as the head coach for NBA All-Star Game for team Giannis in February 2023. Besides, the 34-year-old began coaching in 2013 as an assistant coach at Glenville State University.
Ben Sullivan - Assistant Coach
Ben Sullivan has been working as Boston Celtics Assistant Coaches since 2021. Sullivan spent two seasons with the Bucks before joining Boston.
He attended the University of Portland, where he played basketball from 2004 to 2007. After Ben went unpicked in the 2007 NBA Draft, he decided to step away from playing and officially began his tutelage career at his former school, Portland.
After toiling as a director of basketball technology at Portland, Ben transitioned into his first assistant coach position at Lewis & Clark College in 2011. Sullivan worked briefly at the San Antonia Spurs in 2012 as a video intern before landing a job at Atlanta Hawks.
After spending approximately three to four years as an assistant with the Hawks, Ben joined the Milwaukee Bucks as their assistant coach. Later, before the 2021-22 NBA season, Sullivan was hired by the Celtics.
Damon Stoudamire - Assistant Coach
Damon Stoudamire joined the Boston Celtics coach roster in July 2021. He assumed the task of Assistant Coach for 2 years and departed in 2023.
Stoudamire bid farewell to the Celtics to embrace the esteemed position of head coach for Georgia Tech's men's basketball program starting with the next season's NCAA March Madness.
On the other hand, Damon Stoudamire is a retired NBA player who spent more than a decade playing for four different franchises.
The Toronto Raptors drafted him with the third overall pick in the 1995 NBA Draft. Stoudamire then moved to the Portland Trail Blazers in 1998, Memphis Grizzlies in 2005, and Sacramento Kings in 2008.
Following his retirement from playing, Stoudamire embarked on a coaching career. Damon served as the head coach at the Pacific Tigers from 2016 to 2021, guiding the Tigers to a record of 71 wins and 77 losses during his five-season tenure.
Aaron Miles - Assistant Coach
Aaron Miles undertook the position of the Boston Celtics assistant coach following the start of the 2021-22 season.
Miles, who played professionally overseas for several years, has experience coaching in the G League and is a skilled player development coach.
Besides, Aaron was previously an assistant coach for the Kansas Jayhawks and the Golden State Warriors. He has a strong reputation for player development and has worked with some of the league's finest players.
The former Warriors point guard ventured into coaching after retiring with the Russian club Lokomotiv Kuban in 2015. He joined the Jayhawks tutorship team and worked there for a year, gathering experience.
In 2019, Stoudamire was offered a player development position by his former team, the Golden State Warriors, which he eagerly accepted. After spending two years with the Warriors, he embarked on a novel chapter of his career as an assistant at Boston.
Tony Dobbins - Assistant Coach
Tony Dobbins Celtics tenure as an assistant coach began at the Celtics in 2020. Dobbins was with the video team before his big promotion.
The 6-foot-5 former basketball player joined Boston as a video intern in 2018 after announcing his retirement from playing. He was with the Italian basketball team Sacafati basket at the time of the final goodbye to his paying career.
Dobbins was born Anthony Dobbins in Washington DC in 1981, and he played for the Virginia Tech basketball team in the NCAA tournament. Then he joined the Richmond Spiders in 2001, and after three years, in 2004, he declared his name for the 2004 NBA Draft.
Although Dobbins' dream of playing in the NBA was shattered when he went undrafted, he persevered and pursued his passion by playing in various European leagues. Eventually, he transitioned to coaching, becoming the assistant coach for the Celtics.
DJ MacLeay - Assistant Coach
DJ MacLeay has been in the Boston Celtics Coach Roster since the 2022-23 NBA season. MacLeay previously served as the player enhancement coach at the club.
He joined the Celtics team in July 2021 and worked for a year with players in enhancing their skills, performance, physical conditioning, and overall growth.
At the outset of the new season in July 2022, Celtics promoted DJ to work directly with the head coach Joe Mazzulla and alongside other assistants. Before joining the Celtics, MacLeay spent some time in the video department of the Philadelphia 76ers.
He worked as a video coaching associate from May 2017 to August 2018 and later took on the role of video coordinator for three years, from 2018 to 2021. This experience laid the foundation for his leadership career, marking his official start in the field.
Ty Yeaton - Head Strength/Conditioning Coach
Ty Yeaton started his tenure at the Celtics as the head strength & conditioning coach in September 2015. Yeaton is currently in his 7th season with Boston.
He completed his academics with a master's degree in High-Performance Sport and Exercise Science at the Australian Catholic University in 2019.
Before starting his day at the Celtics as a Strength and Conditioning Coach, Ty worked at a performance training company in New Hampshire. There, he coached a diverse group of clients and athletes.
Later, Yeaton got an opportunity to work with Boston while also serving as the Head Strength Coach for their G-League team, the Maine Red Claws. He split his time between the two organizations for two seasons before being hired full-time by Boston.
His main responsibilities include designing year-round strength and conditioning programs for the athletes and implementing them on a daily basis.
Garret Jackson - Player Enhancement Coach
Boston Celtics hired Garret Jackson as an assistant coach as part of their player enhancement staff in September 2021.
The former small forward had a brief professional playing career, mainly in the NBL leagues. He joined the North-West Tasmania Thunder but was immediately transferred to another NBL side Melbourne United in 2015.
During the 2018-19 season, Jackson joined the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors college basketball team as a graduate manager. He helped out with various tasks such as analyzing videos, scouting opponents, recruiting new players, and assisting in the development of the team's players.
In April 2019, Jackson got an opportunity to work as an intern in the video department of the San Antonio Spurs and held that position until the end of the 2020-21 NBA season.
Craig Luschenat - Player Enhancement Coach
Craig Luschenat is an integral part of the Boston Celtics player development. Craig accepted the role of Player Enhancement Coach in July 2022.
Before his stint at Boston, Luschnant was an assistant coach for the Maine Celtics, a Boston affiliate for three years since joining in September 2018. Besides, he also worked as a player development intern in Los Angeles, California, for Wasserman Sports Agency Clients.
His primary responsibilities involved organizing and guiding workout sessions for NBA players and building connections with players and agents.
Notably, he had the privilege of working with renowned NBA All-Stars like Russell Westbrook and Anthony Davis. Besides, Luschenat was a former player who played collegiate basketball for Oxford Brookes University and Saint Joseph’s College.
Matt Reynolds - Special Assistant to Head Coach
Matt Reynolds is one of the long time employees at the Celtics who have been with the coaching team since 2015.
Reynolds has been part of the Boston franchise for the longest time compared to anyone else on the current list of Boston Celtics coaches. He joined the club in 2015 as someone who helped with videos, and over the years, he moved up in the team's hierarchy.
In 2019, Reynolds was a special helper to Brad Stevens and Ime Udoka, and following the 2022 season, he was officially named an assistant under Mazzulla.
Matt also toiled as a basketball graduate assistant at Eastern Michigan University for a year in 2012. A year prior, he was mentoring Lexington High School in a junior varsity basketball tournament.
